Paddy Rafferty

Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, Compassion Focussed Therapy, EMDR

Since qualifying as a counsellor in 1996, I have worked continuously as a psychological therapist in a range of settings that include registered charities, private practice and the NHS. I now work solely in private practice.

My last post in the NHS before I took retirement in 2020 was as a Psychological Therapies Lead.  As an experienced and versatile psychotherapist, I am fully qualified and accredited as a Drug and Alcohol Counsellor, Cognitive Behaviour Therapist and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapist.

As is in keeping with my professional status, I work under clinical supervision and I am GPDR Compliant.

TYPES OF THERAPY OFFERED:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

APPROACH

It is my hope that, if you were to come to me for therapy, you would very quickly feel that you were in the right place to resolve the problems that brought you to therapy in the first place.

Not only would you feel welcome, respected and in control of what happens within our work, but you would also feel safe in the knowledge that your difficulties are being taken seriously, you would be helped to understand why you are struggling with these difficulties and you would have a clear sense of what you and I needed to do together to help you move on in your life.

WHO I WORK WITH

I primarily work now with adults who are struggling with the impact of past events which have been traumatic.  Traumatic events can sometimes be one-off events such as a car accident or a robbery.  However, traumatic events can also be a range of difficult experiences that have happened over a longer period of time, very often in childhood, such as being bullied at school or home, a parent’s drinking, abuse or loss and bereavement.

Achieving good mental health, therefore, involves appreciating and lessening the impact of these past events.  The therapies I choose to practice (EMDR, CBT and CFT) are generally seen as effective in this task.
