Psychological Therapies for Children and Young People
Many children and teenagers have difficulties and challenges that impact how they feel, act, or learn. Our child psychologist practices psychological therapies for children and young people can help them cope better, feel better, and do better in their daily lives.
Psychological Therapies for Children and Young People
Many children and young people experience difficulties and challenges which can impact on their mental health e.g. low mood and anxiety, which can begin to have an impact upon their everyday life eg going to school, socialising with friends etc. They may have gone through traumatic experiences from which they are struggling to recover. They may be becoming very stressed about their future e.g. the transition to high school, GCSE’s. Although there is evidence that these types of difficulties are on the increase in children and young people, there is also evidence that psychological therapies can be helpful once everyday life has started to be affected.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy – CBT
CBT is a long established form of psychotherapy which involves working with the young person (and their parents where appropriate) to explore their thoughts, feelings and behaviour, and to develop an understanding of what is keeping their difficulties going -the vicious cycle. From that point the therapist works with the young person to begin to break this cycle and to develop more helpful ways of managing negative/anxious thoughts and to change unhelpful patterns of behaviour.
There is a wealth of research about CBT and it is recognised by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). It is an effective form of treatment for specific problems experienced by children and young people such as obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, low mood, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing – EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy that can be very effective in terms of helping young people and children who are experiencing difficulties as a result of trauma.
In children and young people this might relate to road traffic accidents, assaults, bullying – anything traumatic from which the young person is struggling to move on. This form of therapy is focused upon helping the young person to process traumatic memories and can be effective in a short space of time.
If you think that your child/young person may benefit from these therapies but you would like to discuss their needs, we can arrange a brief telephone consultation prior to assessment.
We have various therapists and types of therapies that can be helpful for children and young people who may be struggling at various stages of their lives.
